A unit fraction is a fraction with a numerator of 1. A unit fraction can be expressed as the sum of two equal unit fractions.

An archaeological discovery called the Rhind papyrus shows that Egyptians used unit fractions in their mathematical work well over 3,000 years ago. The Rhind papyrus is about 18 feet long and 1 foot wide. It is in the British Museum in London, England.
