Ounces in a quart
There are 32 fluid ounces (fl oz) in 1 quart (qt) in the US customary system of measurement. In the imperial system of measurement there are 40 fluid ounces in 1 quart.
Ounce to quart conversion
The following converter can be used to convert ounces to quarts and quarts to ounces in both the US customary and imperial systems of measurement. Just select which measurement system you would like to use and enter a value in either ounces or quarts to convert between the two.
Convert ounces to quarts
The conversion between ounces and quarts depends on whether we are using US customary or imperial quarts.
How many ounces in a quart
For US customary quarts,
1 fl oz = qt
32 fl oz = 1 qt
For imperial quarts,
1 fl oz = qt
40 fl oz = 1 qt
Thus, to convert fluid ounces to quarts divide by 32 for US quarts or by 40 for imperial quarts. To convert from quarts to fluid ounces, multiply by 32 for US quarts and divide by 40 for imperial quarts. Below are some fluid ounce to quart conversion examples.
Examples
1. Convert 67 US customary fluid ounces to quarts:
67 fl oz ÷ 32 = 33.5 qt
2. Convert 3.92 imperial quarts to fluid ounces:
3.92 qt × 40 = 156.8 fl oz
What is an ounce
The term "ounce" is used to describe either a measure of volume or a measure of weight.
Fluid ounce vs ounce
A fluid ounce (fl oz), the ounce described on this page, is a measurement of fluid volume. An ounce (oz) is a measurement of weight. Although they use the same name, fluid ounces and ounces are entirely different measures. For the most part, we rely on the context of whatever we are talking about when someone says "ounce" to determine whether we are discussing volume or weight. For example, if someone is talking about a 12 oz glass of orange juice, they are most likely referencing volume. A 7 oz steak on the other hand is a reference to the weight of the steak.
US customary ounce vs imperial ounce
There are also different measures of fluid ounces that are in use today: the US customary fluid ounce and the imperial fluid ounce. The US customary fluid ounce is slightly larger than imperial fluid ounce. Their relationships are shown below in terms of milliliters.
US customary fluid ounce
1 US customary fl oz = 29.5735295625 mL
The table below shows the relationships between a US customary ounce and other liquid measures of volume.
1 fl oz | = gallon |
= quart | |
= pint | |
= cup |
Imperial fluid ounce
1 imperial fl oz = 28.4130625 mL
The table below shows the relationships between an imperial fluid ounce and other imperial measurements of volume.

What is a quart
A quart is a measurement of volume in both the imperial and US customary systems of measurement that is equal to ¼ gallon. Regardless which system of measurement is being used, this definition holds true. However, since the imperial gallon and the US customary gallons have different measures, a quart in each system is not the same.
US customary quart
US customary quarts are broken down into liquid and dry quarts. A liquid quart is used for liquid measures of volume. A dry quart is also a measure of volume, but it is used for dry ingredients such as a quart of blueberries. The dry quart therefore represents the volume of the container rather than the actual volume of blueberries since we cannot easily account for the space between each blueberry.
Liquid quart
The table below shows the relationship between liquid quarts and other US customary measures of liquid volume.
1 quart | = gallon |
= 2 pints | |
= 4 cups | |
= 32 fl oz | |
= 946.352946 mL | |
= 33.307 imperial fl oz |
Dry quart
The following table shows the relationship between dry quarts and other dry measures of volume.
1 quart | = bushels |
= pecks | |
= dry gallons | |
= 2 dry pints | |
= 1,101.220942715 mL | |
= 38.758 imperial fl oz |
Imperial quart
In the imperial system, there is no distinction between liquid and dry measures of volume; the same units are used for both. The table below shows the relationships between imperial quarts and other measures of volume.
1 quart | = gallon |
= 2 pints | |
= 40 fl oz | |
= 1,136.5225 mL | |
= 38.430 US fl oz |
